Simply leave out the items one lacks, and arrange what one has in the order show. So, if you're ever in doubt about how to lay the table, or in which order to use the cutlery at one's place, now you know. Peter

George H. W. Bush's Outsized Legacy

Robert Merry at Test Feed Using Fields - 10 hours ago
*Robert Merry* *George H. W. Bush, United States* The American people made him a one-term president, but his legacy lives on. In assessing the presidential legacy of George Herbert Walker Bush, who died Friday at 94, one fact stands out above all others: He was a one-term president by verdict of the electorate. That means the voters in 1992 judged him to have been insufficiently successful in his presidential term to justify retention in office. Unless one wants to argue that the voters were wrong, or perhaps stupid, this electoral judgment must be taken seriously in defining the... more »

Stealth Shootout: In 1999, a U.S. Air Force F-117 Was Shot Down. Here's How it Went Down.

Sebastien Roblin at Test Feed Using Fields - 10 hours ago
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, * The F-117 shootdown was an embarrassing, though fortunately non-fatal, episode for the U.S. Air Force. It has been endlessly cited since as ‘proof’ that supposedly radar-invisible stealth planes could ‘easily’ be shot down by even dated Soviet-era SAM systems. *The missile commander decided to set an ambush for the stealth jets, deploying S-125M batteries with a good firing angle on the NATO jets as they flew back to Italy.* At 8 p.m. on March 27, 1999, a bizarre-looking black painted airplane cut through the night sky over Serbia. Active shooter incidents and police response

Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man - 12 hours ago
Greg Ellifritz has noted a change in active shooter tactics, including setting up ambushes to catch responding officers. Most of us aren't police, but we can learn useful lessons from the history of active shooter incidents and how they're likely to play out. We can adapt our response accordingly, and hopefully keep ourselves and our loved ones from harm in the process. I was reviewing some of the recent articles about the Borderland Bar shooting in California. During that shooting, the killer purposely stopped firing on the victims to set up an ambush to attack the police offic...more »

Yellow vest revolution shows the surrealism of decarbonization

They protest against the increased price of fuels from the beginning of 2019 that is scheduled to follow from Macron's version of the carbon tax. The president uses the slogan "Make the Planet Great Again". Tom calls the price hike significant but my understanding is that the petrol price should only increase by some 4% (6% of 60% of the price which is the tax) which seems noticeable but rather insignificant. The Russian Minority Question In Estonia (II)

Vladislav B. SOTIROVIĆ at OrientalReview.org - 15 hours ago
It is obvious that the more the Russian minority is integrated into the society socially and culturally, the more likely a person is to generate real loyalty to Estonia as “his/her own” society. However, taking into account the present Estonian minority policy, it is much predictable that Estonia's Russian-speakers will much more tend towards a separation but not towards the integration. Thinkers Must Confine Themselves to the Area of Their Expertise

Anoop Verma at The Verma Report - 16 hours ago
Thomas Reid; Ayn RandThomas Reid, in the final paragraph of *An Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense*, notes that all the thinkers who attempt to develop a theory of everything, end up creating work that is lacking in quality and significance. He gives the example of Galileo and Newton, who, he says, managed to create works of timeless importance because they confined themselves to the core area of their expertise. Here’s an excerpt: If Galileo had attempted a complete system of natural philosophy, he had, probably, done little service to mankind: but by c... more »

How We Pay For The Green New Deal Is Easier Than You Think

DownWithTyranny at DownWithTyranny! - 16 hours ago
I watch Stephanie Kelton videos on YouTube and I talk with her on the phone but one of the reasons I ventured out of balmy Los Angeles for the frozen shores of Lake Champlain was because I knew Stephanie would be speaking at Berniepalooza. She didn’t disappoint and speaking with her and watching her on the Green New Deal panels were highlights of my rare trip back east. On the other hand, reading her *HuffPo* Green New Deal piece over the weekend, co-authored by Andres Bernal and Greg Carlock, might’ve been a way to… not schlepp all the way to icy Vermont. The Green New Deal is th... more »

*Hey millennials, it's not your school's job to teach you life skills* I came across a post I wrote a while back, five years almost to the day in fact, about a workshop I had attended at my daughter’s school as she transitioned into high school. One year to go, and she’s about to transition into the real world. Where did that time go? The purpose of the workshop was to talk about our hopes and concerns for our daughters as they entered into high school, I wrote then. “Parents were worried about bullying, time management, study skills, social media, friendship groups ... all valid...more »

*Accident Leads to Incredible Discovery, Regrowing Coral Reefs Like Never Before* When you have a task to complete, many times it seems best to hunker down and focus solely on finishing that task until it's done. Whether that's writing a novel, making sales calls or writing lesson plans, putting everything else out of your mind and getting to work is a proven means to accomplish your goals. When you have blinders or tunnel vision, though, you often forget to stop to smell the roses or see what's going on around you and what valuable lessons or insights you might be missing. War News Updates Editor at War News Updates - 16 hours ago
*Defense One: **The US Military Is Genetically Engineering New Life Forms To Detect Enemy Subs* The Pentagon is also looking at living camouflage, self-healing paint, and a variety of other applications of engineered organisms, but the basic science remains a challenge. How do you detect submarines in an expanse as large as the ocean? It’s one of many potential military applications for so-called en... more »
