How the Govt Shutdown Affects GDP
In this interview, CEA chair Kevin Hassett (around minute 4:00) dismisses the adverse impact of the government shutdown on real GDP. It seems to me that he is more wrong than right. Kevin appears to be assuming that government workers don't produce anything of value when they are at work, or that they will make up all the undone work when they return, so making them stay at home has no significant economic impact. If that were really the case, we should give them all shorter work weeks, so they can enjoy more leisure. To me, that does not seem tenable. Take, for example, the nationa... more »

Miracle at 'Is the BBC biased?'
*As it's nearly Christmas (and as it's a pet interest of mine)...* Mr. Kringle, in Miracle on 34th Street This week's *Archive on 4* was excellent. Its title was *How Santa Claus Stole Christmas*. Yes, it was partly a reflection of that most time-honoured of Christmas traditions, the annual festive grumble that Christmas has become too commercialised and Americanised - with an added 'very BBC' layer of talk about 'capitalism' - but it was still a great listen, and full of interesting highways and byways. All credit then to Sir Christopher Frayling. May all his Christmases be white... more »

He blames Trump, rather than his own unwillingness to break with Trump over the last two years. Yesterday he tweeted bitterly: "Still with the benefit (or curse) of an inside perspective, I must say that the instability and chaos in our government the past few days has been particularly pronounced — worse than at any point during my service in Congress, and really, my lifetime. Things are not well in the USA." Too late to save himself, Curbelo was one o... more »

On The Industrial Revolution
For several years, I have been of the view that the Industrial Revolution which began in the 1760s did not end in the 1840s; it is still continuing. Modernism, postmodernism, and all the big or small political movements that the world has seen in the last 200 years, are minor forces in comparison to the Industrial Revolution. Now while reading Jacob Bronowski’s *The Ascent of Man*, I find this interesting point on the Industrial Revolution (Chapter 8: “The Drive for Power”): "Where would a man like me be, where would you be, if we had been born before 1800? We still live in the midd... more »

Remembering Paddy Ashdown
Like his genuinely popular and admired successor, Charles Kennedy, Paddy Ashdown cut a charismatic if not avuncular figure among the big beasts and creepy crawlies of the Westminster jungle. As the publisher's blurb for his 2010 autobiography says, "Ashdown’s appeal ... is that he transcends party political allegiances, and is seen as a genuinely honest and decent man unafraid to take on the hardest challenges." The tributes from Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May typify this, with the Sunday schedules rammed with admiring obituaries from all quarters. But apart from his sparkling reputa... more »
