Sign The Open Letter To Stop The US War On Venezuela
The global spread of COVID-19 has exposed the illegal and immoral practice of imposing unilateral coercive measures (economic sanctions) by the United States government against more than thirty nations. The economic war against those nations had already resulted in unimaginable suffering of the people in the targeted nations even before the COVID-19 pandemic. With the devastation of the global pandemic, the targeted countries — especially Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, Syria and Zimbabwe — are finding it prohibitively difficult to protect and save the lives of their citizens in the face o... more »

A Pandemic Is No Time For Precarious Work
The Trump administration and many of its wealthiest allies recklessly floated an end to social distancing, endangering public health to allegedly help “the economy.” I don’t usually take the trouble of responding to right-wing opinions, but the gleeful celebration of the gig economy during a pandemic is further evidence of an empathy deficit among their ranks. Take Aways From The #NotMeUs Campaign
Yesterday, writing for *Politico* Magazine, John Harris looked at two factors he says will determine how history looks at Bernie's #NotMeUs campaign. Harris, of course-- like the entire DC Establishment-- insists that Bernie tell his supporters NOT that Biden must be backed because he is the only alternative to Trump but that "a Biden presidency would be affirmatively good—a step, even if more tentative than Sanders would wish, toward advancing a transformative progressive agenda." Many thoughtful Bernie supporters will find this patently absurd, but Harris insists Bernie not just... more »

The United States experienced a historical decline in life expectancy due to an epidemic of deaths of despair. In a matter of months, people lost their jobs, lifetime savings, and their homes. A strikingly similar situation is happening now. Fact is a public health and stable economies go hand in hand. But... more »

Obama left us unprepared for coronavirus so Biden blames Trump
Diseases and natural disasters depleted the US's stockpile of emergency equipment, like N95 masks, under Obama and not only didn't he try and replace them he asked for cuts, of more than 10%, in the funding for the stockpile. In the 2011 budget for example Obama requested $523M for the stockpile which was a reduction of $72M or 12%. Now all but about $4M of that would be made up by money transferred from another account that dealt with H1N1 but the point is that Obama was ok with cutting funding for the stockpile when he wanted to increase funding for all sorts of left wing program... more »

As the Coronavirus Ravages the United States, a Fragile Truce Between Beijing and Washington Takes Hold

Capitalism Has Failed In Fighting Coronavirus
The desperate policies of panic-driven governments involve throwing huge amounts of money at the economies collapsed in response to the coronavirus threat. Monetary authorities create money and lend it at extremely low interest rates to the major corporations and especially big banks “to get them through the crisis.” Government treasuries borrow vast sums to get the collapsed economy back into what they imagine is “the normal, pre-virus economy.” Capitalism’s leaders are rushing into policy failures because of their ideological blinders. The problem of policies aimed to return th... more »
What It Looked Like When Wisconsin Forced In-Person Voting During A Pandemic
As footage of Wisconsin's crowded polling stations flooded the internet Tuesday, public health officials and civil rights advocates condemned the state's Supreme Court and Republican legislative leaders for allowing in-person voting during the coronavirus pandemic and thwarting Democratic Gov. Who is (was) on Question Time tonight? (Last night) The fact is, (as they say on W1A) who cares? I have to level with you - I didn’t watch it. Did anyone? In the era of Lockdown, Q.T. is incontrovertibly dire. ‘Direr’ than usual. There’s not even a whooping and hooting audience to complain about. Tom Cotton on the Afghanistan War and draw down

Covid-19 Confronts American Exceptionalism

WE NEED A NEW MODEL
We're seeing some success in the fight against covid-19, but *The Washington Post* reports, unsurprisingly, that the president is making big plans to destroy all our good work. The Trump administration is pushing to reopen much of the country next month, raising concerns among health experts and economists of a possible covid-19 resurgence if Americans return to their normal lives before the virus is truly stamped out. Behind closed doors, President Trump — concerned with the sagging economy — has sought a strategy for resuming business activity by May 1, according to people famili... more »
Nietzsche’s Top Fifteen Thinkers
Nietzsche, a remarkably well-read man, had done an extensive study of several thinkers, from ancients Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Thucydides, and Plato, to the moderns Martin Luther, Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, and Emerson, and his own contemporaries Schopenhauer and Mill. A part of Nietzsche’s private library, which has been preserved, contains several books with his annotations. Through influenced by several thinkers, he didn’t see himself as anyone’s protege—he had a kind of love-hate relationship with his favorite thinkers. What Sanders Dropping out Says About What Democrats Want
*Adam Hodges* *Politics, Americas* [image: Reuters] In the current political moment, it appears the Democratic electorate longs less for a politician who is consistent from day to day than one who can provide pragmatic leadership to unseat the vacillating Trump. In many ways, Bernie Sanders is the anti-Trump. And, in important ways, he ran his campaign as the anti-Biden. Sanders bowed out of the Democratic nomination race on April 8, repeating his runner-up status from four years earlier. His two runs at the White House have cemented his legacy as a consistent standard-bearer fo... more »

When the First World War broke out in August 1914 many in colonial German East Africa (modern day Tanzania) had hoped the war would be over quickly, and there were those who hoped the region would be declared neutral. Meet the Sarmat—Russia’s Massive ICBM that can Hit Nearly Any Place on Earth
*Caleb Larson* *Technology, Europe* Dr. Strangelove would love this. Russia inherited a missile collection from the Soviet Union that is rival to none—arguably bigger in type and overall diversity than any other nation’s missile arsenal. Although some of their intercontinental missiles are beginning to show their age, their newest, the Sarmat, would be quite dangerous. It’s combination of very high range, possible hypersonic capability, and a variety of nuclear warheads would be perhaps unparalleled—if it ever becomes operational. *Drum Roll* In his 2018 State of the Union addr... more »

How Ukraine Kept Its Giant, Aging Seaplanes Flying
*David Axe* *Technology, Europe* [image: https://ipv6.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos/140909-N-IY142-288.JPG] An interesting tale. The Soviet Union designed the Beriev Be-12 seaplane in the late 1950s to hunt NATO submarines. But improving enemy air defenses doomed the slow, ungainly amphibian in that role, so it switched to patrol and search-and-rescue mission. When the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, Ukraine inherited a handful of the 32-ton seaplanes. But Kiev could never afford to maintain the increasingly geriatric patrollers—especially considering what saltwater does t... more »
