Saturday snippet: A doofus in Africa
This isn't your typical "Doofus Of The Day" incident. It's a tale from about forty years ago, when yours truly was still young, sweet and innocent. (That's my story, anyway, and I'm sticking to it!) I came across it while re-reading the late Brigadier-General Dick Lord's excellent book "From Fledgling to Eagle: The South African Air Force during the Border War". The story made me laugh just as hard as it did the first time I heard it, so I thought you might enjoy it, too. It became something of a legend among troops on the border between South West Africa - now Namibia - and... more »
How Great Would It Be To See Trump Debating Bernie About Healthcare Instead Of Trump Debating Biden About Who Has The Most Corrupt Family?
Let's take a few minutes away from impeachment, Ukraine and China-- although I do want to mention the reporting did for the *Wall Street Journal*, about how Trump lied to Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) when Johnson confronted him about the illegal pressure he was putting on Ukraine, a quid pro quo to get Ukraine to help Trump steal the 2020 election, the way he stole the 2020 election. When Johnson asked Señor T, the illegitimate fake president said, "Muthafucker, no way. I would never do that. Who told you that?" *Let the peoplehave the powerto redeem the work of foolsupon the m... more »

Mood Affiliation or Confirming Evidence?
Tyler Cowen introduced an important new idea in 2011 and gave it a name: the fallacy of mood affiliation. His idea is sound and important; the name he gives and even the way he defines it is faulty. These Warships Were the Most Dangerous of the 20th Century
*Robert Farley* *Security, * A century of naval war. *Key point: *A navy is only as effective as its sailors and ships The idea of a ship class, a series of vessels constructed to essentially the same design, is a hallmark of the industrial age of naval warfare. Prior to the emergence of the industrial age, individual ships represented the craftsmanship of different yards, and the relationship between design and construction allowed specific builders a great deal of latitude. As the industrial revolution overtook naval architecture, it became easier to create a specific templa... more »

Sig Sauer’s new P-320 pistol is enjoying a considerable streak of publicity, in large part due to the U.S. Army’s adoption of the it as the service’s new handgun. Harvey Proctor v Naga Munchetty (Transcript: BBC Breakfast, this morning)
*[Naga Munchetty mishandled her interview with Harvey Proctor this morning to a painful extent. Though she was right to seek to present the other side, the way she tried to talk Mr Proctor into silence - especially after he began criticising the BBC's role in the affair - was clumsy at best, especially when she then said, rather snippily, "**Please let me talk and I will let you talk. That is how this works." The point was that she hadn't been letting him talk - as he himself went on to point out. Her petulant-sounding pause midway was hardly what was needed either, especially duri... more »
Gay People Far More Likely To Use Tanning Salons - And It's Leading To 2X More Skin Cancer
If you want to find the gay neighborhood in a new town, look for the tanning salons, according to a new analysis. Neighborhoods with high proportions of gay and bisexual men are twice as likely to have an indoor tanning salon than other neighborhoods. Some will try to argue that the tanning industry is targeting gay and bisexual men ("just like Big Tobacco" is the cliché) but they are already six times more likely than heterosexual men to tan indoors so the stores are going up where the customers are. Due to high usage, gay and bisexual men are about twice as likely to suffer from s... more »

What If Japan Sunk America's Aircraft Carriers at Pearl Harbor?
*Robert Farley* *Security, Asia Pacific* Would this have resulted in a Japanese victory? One of the world's leading naval experts gave us his answer. What if the aircraft carriers of the United States Navy had been present at Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941? The question has bedeviled historians since World War II, as the devastating attack left the most lethal warships of the U.S. Navy intact to fight off the oncoming Japanese offensive. North Korea's New Submarine Launched Missile: Where Was It Fired From?

There are conflicting reports about Wednesday’s launch. While there appears to have been a test of a Pukguksong-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), it’s unclear whether it was fired from an underwater submarine or just some kind of platform. “The missile, believed to be a type of Pukkuksong, a North Korean SLBM, was fired from off the east coast near Wonsan in an easterly direction at 7:11 a.m. and flew a... more »

How My Mom Paid For My College Tuition By Running The Numbers
The numbers racket is largely gone now in the face of real lottery competition, except that the direct competition can provide a much better payout and that keeps it all alive. Quick research though shows it was going strong until 2000 at least and i would not count it out. Trust the government to make something like this illegal. Why bother??? It took a particular type to run the numbers, just as it takes a particular type to sell securities as well. All that is also the glue that activates a community of sorts and help to manage hopes and dreams. The better course is to sim... more »
Hong Kong Color Revolution?
A lot of claims made here pitching the CCP position. Except that it is not really that easy at all. So called color revolutions can be assisted by some one paying for all those flags placards and the like, but it still demands a million boots on the ground. In Hong Kong, even that is hardly necessary. Plenty of serious people do not like the obvious signs of CCP intent and are quite willing to confront it now. That means helping the folks on the street. Report Finds UN Employs 3,300 Pedophiles, Responsible for 60,000 Rapes in Last 10 Years
We can understand the vulnerability of the Catholic Church, the Boy Scouts and the whole education system in which natural pedophile conspiracies will simply spring up and operate under the radar. Now we can add the whole UN bureaucracy in particular or at least that component administrating in lawless lands were oversight is difficult and even dangerous. In fact this corresponds to problems experienced in residential schools in Canada as well. The NPC ( Natural Pedophile Conspiracy ) takes advantage where ever real oversight can be weakened enough. Spectacular rammed-earth dome home is tucked deep into a Costa Rican jungle
There is something important here. That is the building of a truly secure roof structure that is itself high and with additional open spaces that can allow light in that is no part of the actual housing. It acts as a useful shade structure as well which allows additional vegetation as well. With that roof, any form of locally crafted construct can then be built under this artificial canopy. This is particularly useful in a jungle environment were daily downpours are common. Wind storms are always a problem, but that needs to be engineered around. Dropping the structure to ... more »

Slugfest: F-15EX vs. Stealth F-35 Fighter (Which Is Better?)
*Sebastien Roblin* *Security, World* It depends on the mission--if we are being honest. The U.S. military’s over $738 billion dollar budget is unprecedented in human history—but that only makes the struggles for a piece of that monetary pie all the fiercer. One of the battles currently raging revolves over a seemingly simple question: should the Air Force devote a share of its funding to procuring a new version of its oldest fighter, the F-15 Eagle, or devote every available dollar to its newest, the F-35 Lightning. Complicating matters is that the two aircraft are built to do d... more »
